The Zimbambaleni Old Age Home is located in KwaDabeka just outside of New Germany in KwaZulu-Natal. The home puts a focus on sustainable development since they take care of these vulnerable people on an ongoing basis and the continued support of the public is greatly appreciated.
The Robinhood Foundation
We heard about the Mandela Remembrance Week initiative taking place from the 11th until the 18th of July 2016 through the Robinhood Foundation, a non-profit organisation run on a voluntary basis.
One of the Robinhood Foundation’s initiatives is the “Bless a Granny & Grandpa” Project which brightens up the lives of older people who have been forgotten. With the project, this organisation collects a parcel of goodies for each older person.
Avis and The Zimbambaleni Old Age Home
The Avis Fleet KwaZulu-Natal team visited the Gogos and Mkhulus at the Zimbambaleni Old Age home where we spent our 67 minutes serving the nearly 100 older people cupcakes, sausage rolls and tea.
Sustainable development is very important to us, and we chose to visit the Zimbambaleni Old Age Home because we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday.
We enjoyed having tea and snacks and singing with these wonderful people. There was a palpable feeling of joy in the hall as the volunteers interacted with the residents.
Before we left every Granny and Grandpa was given a bag with treats, blankets, beanies, toiletries and snacks to brighten their day and warm them through winter.
We were also very happy to be able to drop off groceries for their pantry which included long life milk, maize, sugar and rice.
