Stick out your thumb and ease pollution

The transport industry is a major contributor to harmful emissions in the atmosphere and people are looking for cleaner sources of fuel to reduce pollution in the environment.

Simultaneously, traffic congestion is a growing problem on our roads and is obviously linked to toxic emissions. What can drivers do to help address these two issues?

Small changes needed to make a large impact on pollution

Although electric cars use cleaner energy, they alone won’t solve the problem of emissions until there is a carbon-free electricity grid.

Electric cars are also resource-intensive to manufacture and take twice as much energy to build. Urban sprawl caused by population growth is leading to people driving more and cancelling out the gains made by electric vehicles.

Simplistic as it sounds, to really make a difference, people must drive less and this could mean small changes. For example, motorists can carpool once a month or choose to walk or use bicycles for short journeys instead of cars.

Surprising solutions for pollution reduction

Here’s a surprising solution to the problem of congestion that’s getting a reboot – hitchhiking. For many years, it has been out of favour because of security concerns.

In Belgium, officials seeking a solution to the growing problem of congestion have been backing the idea of using an app to link up drivers with spare seats and passengers who need a ride.

A Brussels MP said the technology mitigated security issues because it allowed motorists to see who they were picking up beforehand.
