The first national Women’s Day was celebrated in 1995 to honour the courage of the women who took part in a march for equality in 1956.
On 9 August every year, we celebrate the generations of women who helped to make our country what it is today and to those who continue to do their share to improve our lives.

Thuli Madonesela
Thuli Madonsela carved out a place in our hearts as a fearless Public Protector. But her good work didn’t just begin there.
She worked as a human rights lawyer and was involved in community and social justice issues since the 1980s.
This experience gave her a knowledge of policy that equipped her to become part of the team that drafted South Africa’s Constitution in 1996.
Caster Semenya
Olympic gold medallist and International Association of Athletics Federations World Championship winner, Caster Semenya has also been named as South African Sportswoman of the Year.
She has received the bronze Order of Ikhamanga and been shortlisted for the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award.
