[According to research](http://www.stophungernowsa.org/), one in eight people go hungry every day, a child dies from hunger-related causes every 10 seconds and one in four children suffer from stunting.   Rise Against Hunger is a results-oriented nutrition programme, which was started in South Africa in 2009. The vision of Rise Against Hunger is to make South Africa a country without hunger.   Donated food is used to stimulate and encourage measurable results in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. The main focus is on reaching the most vulnerable hungry – children – especially those who attend preschools or ECD centres.   Avis Fleet and all the Barloworld group of companies have partnered with Rise Against Hunger since 2015.   ## Sharing the vision According to the University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute, more than 3 million children under the age of 17 are affected by food insecurity.   Studies have shown the irreversible effects of malnutrition for children in their infancy. These facts have been the motivation for the Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa Hunger Eradication Programme.   ## Fleet management with heart Avis Fleet is committed to supporting Nelson Mandela Day by taking part in the Rise Against Hunger initiative.   Our staff members attended meal packaging events in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. These packages are then sent to needy children, giving them nutritious meals for one year.   The highly nutritious meals comprised of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).   The meal-packaging event is a fun and engaging way for Avis Fleet employees to be part of the drive to end child hunger.  A total of 40 volunteers can package 10 000 meals in under two hours.   With the support of our Socio-Economic Development Champions, we were able to recruit 100 employees to volunteer their time to support this initiative.
